Family Day in YYC for the kid-free

Horray, Family Day! That magical weekend in winter dedicated to those that sacrifice every day to raise tiny humans to be functioning members of society. A day to take the kids out skiing, to the water slides, to the mall, or to the nearby mountain towns for a weekend away. The city is buzzing with family-friendly fun, and those mountain towns? At this point, they’re all booked out!

So, what about those of us who are kid-free? I mean, I have fur-kids but I am (just) sane enough to realize that being the Mother of Cats, doesn’t count. So of you’re like me,  here’s some cool activities for those families who don’t have any members under 18!

1. YYC Hot Chocolate Fest – with a little something extra
Hot chocolate lovers of all ages will be still enjoying the month-long festival, but some of these beverages are adults only! Pop in to one of about to 20 locations for a boozy beverage, I’ve got my eye on Midtown Kitchen and Bar’s Black Forest feature. Mmmm cake hot chocolate…

2. Block Heater 2018 music festival

All ages are admitted, but I see it far less likely that parents will be queuing up with the kiddies for this when there’s things like the free family swim taking place. The festival is located mostly between the Studio Bell and King Eddie Hotel. There’s a variety of ticket times and price combinations so you can pick and choose your commitment – making it suitable to anyone, from the music fest shy to festival junkies.

3. Momix’s Opus Catus by the Alberta Ballet

Shows run all weekend for what is described as a dancer-illusionist style of ballet. Looks like it has a bit of a cirque de soleil feel to it, could be interesting. Having never been to the ballet, I think if any ballet is going to convince me to spend a weekend evening there it would be this one.

4. Caravel’s Winter Luau Hawaiian Party

Complete with a tiki bar and limbo competition, Caravel is attempting to swap Calgary snow for sand and sun! On Saturday, February 17 you can beat the winter woes here and sip on some beer cocktails and a tropical cask. Personally it’s a trek to get up there, so it’s good that they also will have food available so you can plan to stay a while. Dust off those Hawaiian shirts folks!

5. FeBREWary at National on 17

They’re celebrating craft beer (more than usual) all month long at National on 17, by offering all-day happy hour on a different feature beer daily! Central City, Legend 7, and Ol’ Beautiful Brewing have you covered Friday- Sunday during the Family Day Weekend. Oh, and Monday? Happy hour everything. All day. Cause nothing says “we don’t have any kids” like day drinking on a Monday!

So there you have it, pretty much all I could find to do that wasn’t directed at families. It’s not a whole lot, and that’s why there’s Netflix. Can you imagine how many shows you could start (and, erm…finish) in a three day weekend!?

P.s. Legend 7 Brewing is launching at National on 10 that weekend too! february 15 and 16; if you would like to go support Calgary’s newest brewery.
